According to Central Water Commission, Tamil Nadu is witnessing the highest drop in storage levels in the country. Though Chennai experienced rain for two weeks, major reservoirs continue to record 90% lower storage levels compared to last year. However, the Meteorological department reportedly said that rain would continue for the next few days.
Power Minister Piyush Goyal reportedly said that India will be the first country in the world to use LEDs for all lighting needs by 2019. According to NDTV reports, Piyush said, “This effort will help us. India will probably be the first country in the world which will be 100 per cent using LED for its lighting needs by 2019. It will be message that India acts rather than making big promises”. State-run Energy Efficiency Services Ltd has inked pacts with oil marketing companies IndianOil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum for selling its LED bulbs, tube lights and fans at over 54,500 petrol pumps.
Puducherry airport, commenced on Thursday after three years made its first flight to Hyderabad. Puducherry Chief Minister Narayanaswamy greeted all 78 passengers and handed over the boarding pass to each of them. Reportedly, flights to Bengaluru, Kochi, Tirupati and Coimbatore are expected to be started soon. Narayanswamy said that links to Delhi and Chandigarh are in proposal.
Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh reportedly shared a new holiday calendar in which it is said that the state-run universities will not have a holiday on Gandhi Jayanti this year. The state Higher education minister Kiran Maheshwari reportedly said that Gandhi Jayanti is not declared as a holiday because all schools, colleges and universities of the state observe celebrations.
In Kerala’s Al Farooque English school students have to wear different uniforms based on their performance according to The News Minute. There are two uniforms one is white and the other is a red-checked shirt. Apparently, the ‘good performing’ students are made to wear white uniform, while the ‘bad performing’ students are made to wear the red checked uniform. According to the school principal, this discrimination and shaming will encourage the ‘bad performing’ students to study well.
According to reports, Government of India is all set to launch a new pension scheme for senior citizens that promises an assured return of 8%. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will reportedly start the Pradhan Mantri Vaya Vandana Yojana on Friday. Notably, the scheme was announced in Budget 2017-18 and applicable for people aged 60 years and above.
A software engineer in Pune died after bleeding on the road as onlookers clicked pictures and made videos instead of taking him to the hospital. The man, Satish Prabhakar Mete(25), was reportedly hit by a vehicle on Wednesday evening in Bhosari. He was later taken to the hospital by a doctor passing by the scene but declared dead in the hospital.
According to reports, a woman in Cambodia believes that a five-month-old calf is the reincarnation of her dead husband. The 74-year-old woman reportedly said up to 100 people a day visit her home to see the calf which, according to her, behaves very similar to her dead husband. The cow was born in March and has attracted a strong following on social media. A video reportedly shows the calf walking up stairs into the family’s one-story home.
According to reports, female students belonging to the Students’ Federation of India have sent sanitary napkins to Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley as a sign of protest against the imposition of 12% GST on the necessary commodity. The students sent hundreds of napkins inscribed with the slogan ‘Bleed Without Fear, Bleed Without Tax’ to Jaitley through speed post.
